ABA Supports LGBT Inclusion
in its Diversity Goals
At the 2007 Mid-Year meeting in Miami, the ABA House of Delegates voted in favor of a committee-supported recommendation to amend the ABA's Goal IX to include lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people.
The eleven goals of the ABA reflect the specific ideals that the ABA aspires to serve in all its work. When originally adopted in 1991, Goal IX was "to promote full and equal participation in the legal profession by minorities and women." In 1999, Goal IX was amended to include "persons with disabilities." In furtherance of Goal IX, the Association has taken a host of actions that have greatly increased opportunities for minorities, women, and persons with disabilities to achieve their full potential as members of the bar.
The recommendation that was adopted amends Goal IX to assure full and equal participation in the profession without regard to sexual orientation or gender identity. The recommendation was passed without any opposition.
Congratulations to all who worked to make this historic event happen, especially Courtney Joslin for her years in service to the profession.
From the Law Student Division:

The National Association for Law Placement has just conducted a survey of law schools to determine what they are doing to respond to the on-campus presence of military recruiters and to assess new ameliorative practices after Fair vs. Rumsfeld. In that decision, the Court noted that "students are free to associate to voice their disapproval of the military's message."
NALP is encouraging law students and law schools to become vocal in the push to end the discrimination inherent in the Solomon Amendment and the Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy. NALP along with the Law Student Division of the National Lesbian and Gay Law Association is joining SLDN's Lobby Day efforts:
Law Students:
SLDN is working with the Capital LGBT Law Students Consortium to bring you special opportunities during
Lobby Day!
- Law Student Lobby Lunch: Network with other law students over lunch on Monday, March 26 after your meetings on Capitol Hill. The lunch will be free for law students and will be held at Georgetown University Law Center, just blocks from the Capitol, from 12:30pm to 2:30pm. If you plan on attending the lunch, please RSVP to Helen Pihlstrom (hep4 at law.georgetown.edu) to give the Consortium an idea of how much food to order. After the lunch, everyone will head over together to the 3pm rally at the Capitol.
- Housing: If your group needs a place to stay while visiting Washington for Lobby Day, the Consortium may be able to coordinate arrangements with local law students. Contact Becca Levin (becca.levin at american.edu), one of NLGLA's Law Student Division Chairs for details.
