New This Year: Individual Career Counseling!
Lavender Law 2007 – Chicago is proud to offer a new service
to law students: Individual Career Counseling
Individual Career Counseling is designed to provide students with a safe, confidential space where they can ask questions about job search skills, being out on your resume, in interviews and in the workplace, and other related issues.
In conjunction with the Career Fair, students will have the opportunity to meet on-site with legal career services professionals. These legal career counselors are qualified to provide students with advice on resume, cover letter, and interviewing, plus all counselors have significant workplace experience in various legal sectors, including LGBT advocacy, big firms, and government.
Our on-site counseling team:
Shawn M. Beem, Bill Chamberlain, Andrew Chapin, Arthur Fama,
Tom Grewe, Skip Horne, Vicki D. Jordan, J.D.,
Karl C. Riehl, Esq., Eric J. Stern, Esq., Tony Waller
How will it work? How do I sign up for an appointment?
When you check-in at registration, you can sign up for a scheduled appointment with the counselor of your choice. Each appointment will be 30 minutes in length. Some counselors will also be available on a “walk-in” basis for quick questions about the career fair. Counselors will be available for appointments and walk-ins on Thursday, September 6th, from 10:30am to 4:30pm. Additional details will be provided when you check in at registration.
If you have any questions about this new service, please email Eric Stern.

Tips for a Successful Lavender Law
Career Fair Experience
TIP ONE -- Do Your Homework
Each student is responsible for researching the firms or legal departments listed on the Career Fair page. You will only be able to meet with a few recruiters, so spend your time wisely. Recruiters from individual firms report that well over half of the LavLaw students that talk to firm representatives are familiar with specifics about the firm, including the firms' practice areas, and the firms' hiring criteria. For those seeking employment in the social justice movement, or in the government, knowing the organization and its legal team is even more important to those organizations.
TIP TWO -- Have Your "Elevator Story" Ready
Always be ready to shake someone's hand and introduce yourself! Lavender Law provides lots of time to talk with practitioners and leading impact litigators during the social and networking receptions. Be ready to ask questions to the leaders in the movement, and be ready to give them a short "elevator story" explaining where you fit in the LGBT movement and in the legal profession.
TIP THREE -- Focus on the Follow Up
Bring copies of your resume, as well as writing samples. Be ready to follow up with people and make sure they know how to get in contact with you. More and more students each year bring personal cards with name and contact information.
TIP FOUR -- Always Be Networking
What Facebook and MySpace have become for online social networking, NLGLA wants to become for online career networking. To become an active member of our LGBT legal professionals virtual community, please log in to the NLGLA Website using your username and password (included in your confirmation email) and update the details of your profile - add a photo, your mailing address, and your interests in the law. Then browse the member database for other LGBT legal professionals in your area who share your interests! Questions about the online community should be directed to Jennifer. |
